History of CAMA Crafts project in Kosovo
The rebuilding of homes and
businesses is still a common sight in the ex-Yugoslavian province of
Kosovo (Kosova) after the war which ended in June of 1999. Over 10,000
people lost their lives and many Kosovars where displaced from their
homes. CAMA Services went in to Kosova in August of 1999, in order to
develop a micro-enterprise project which would allow the Kosovar women to
earn a moderate income allowing them to help provide for their families.
All of the items in this catalogue were made by Kosovar women, either
widows, or low income women trying to make ends meet for their families.
There is a supplemental page which includes crafts made by Bosnian women,
also victims of the Balkan war.

The
CAMA Services wanted to take a skill that the Kosovar
women knew already and market it in the states. Crochet work is a common
skill among the Kosovar community. Among the Albanian population, the
women begin crocheting when they are teen-agers to prepare for their
weddings. On the first out of four days of their wedding, they will
display all of their crochet work in a room that is covered with clean and
cellophane wrapped doilies, table clothes and pillow covers. This proves
their worth as a bride and the crafts are then given to their
mother-in-law as part of a dowry.

Crocheting
a placemat
We started
with 30 widows. There were many of them after the war. We now have 280 women
registered in the
program,
not all are widows but because the unemployment rate is at 70%, even women,
in this patriarcal society, are working to try to help their husbands
provide
for their families.

All of the prices are
“suggested” prices only. The prices include the price we pay for
the yarn, the price we pay the women, (which is based on the cultural
norms for that type of work) and the price we pay for postage. The pieces
are UPSed out from Skopje, Macedonia to assure its safe arrival to the
states. Any time postage is saved due to hand carried items, that money is
used to pay the national craft coordinator’s salary (which is not figured
into the price of the item.) Therefore, 100% goes to the project.
